TO THE CHURCH IN LAODICEA
To the Church in Laodicea
“The words uttered where not alone for John on the Isle of Patmos, they were not for the churches alone, but through these churches was to come the inspired message for the people, to have its powerful impression in every age to the close of this earth´s history.”
“The application of the various messages to the seven churches to seven consecutive periods of church history naturally suggests the utility of a series of transition dates to facilitate the coordination of the several messages with their respective historical periods.”
The historical period for this church is from 1844 to the Second Advent of Christ. The main characteristic of the majority in this church period is that Christians are neither cold nor hot, but lukewarm in their Christian experience.
Rev 3:14. And to the angel of the Laodicean church write, these things says the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God.
Who is the faithful and true witness?
Rev 1:5. And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead and the ruler over the kings of the earth.
Rev 3:14 and Rev 1:5 are problem texts because they infer that Jesus Christ was born or created.
What does “firstborn” mean in scripture?
Luk 2:7. (Christ born of Mary). And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Firstborn her means Mary`s firstborn child).
Psalm 89:26.27. I have found my servant David; with my holy oil I have anointed him – – -. Also I will make him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. (Firstborn means the highest of the kings of the earth in this text). Why? How can David be the firstborn when he had seven older brothers?
1 Samuel 16:10.11.13. Thus, Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is keeping sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.
The names of the sons of Jesse.
1 Chronicles 2:13.14. Jesse begot Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third, Nathanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, Ozen the sixth, and David the seventh. (In this text it says that David had six brothers. Why the discrepancy between 1 Sam 16:10.13 eight sons of Jesse and in 1 Chron 2:13.14 seven sons of Jesse? It maybe that one had died of sickness or by accident).
How can David be the firstborn of God when he is the youngest of the seven sons of Jesse? Because in Psalm 89:20.27 it says that firstborn means the highest of the kings of the earth in God´s eyes.
Psalm 89:26.27. I have found my servant David; with my holy oil I have anointed him – – -. Also I will make him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
Another text using the word firstborn indicating the same meaning is found in Exodus 4:22. Then you shall say to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord: Israel is my son, my firstborn.”
Adam was the firstborn of all mankind, but Israel was God´s chosen people above all the nations of the earth. 1 Chron 16:13. Ex 19:5.6.
Let us come to Rev 3:14 referring to Christ as the beginning of the creation of God. A similar text to this is found in Colossians 1:15. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principles or powers. All things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he may have the preeminence.
How can Jesus Christ be the firstborn of the dead, when Moses died and ended up in heaven, he was seen on the Mount of Transfiguration by Peter, James and John. Matt 17:1-4.
It is because the word firstborn in this text means the highest in God´s eyes and does not mean literally firstborn. Christ is the head of the church. Christ is the highest at the beginning of the creation of God and was before the creation of God. Christ himself was not created because in Micah 5:2 it says that he was from everlasting. Only God is from everlasting. Psalm 90:2.
Firstborn is related to the following: Literal firstborn as Mary gave birth to Jesus. In relationships to David, he was made the highest of all the kings of the earth in God´s eyes. In relation to Christ, he was not created but is the creator of all things. He is before all things. Christ is the head of the church. He is the firstborn of the dead. He is the image of God.
The word beginning in Rev 3:14 refers to that which initiates an action, a first cause, a prime mover. So Christ began creation, it was him who created all things from the beginning, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit.
Rev 3:15-17. I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. Thus, because you are lukewarm, and not cold nor hot, I am about to vomit you out of my mouth. Because you say, I am wealthy, and I have become rich and I have need of nothing, and you do not know that you are wretched and pitiable poor and blind and naked.
The whole problem with the Laodician church is their works. The favorite text these Christians like to use is from Ephesians 2:8.9. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and not of yourselves; it is a gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
As a result, works is left aside or done by a bare minimum e.g. Coming to church on a weekly basis, paying tithe and offerings and going to prayer meetings. Mission work and witnessing for Christ is down to a bare minimum or even not used. Most of this message is the result of Martin Luther´s teachings during the Reformation. He concentrated on the teaching of righteousness by faith, and left out the works e.g. He died not believing in the letter by James in the New Testament, describing faith without works is dead.
James 2:14. What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?
James 2:17. Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
James 2:20. But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
James 2:22. Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect.
Martin Luther did not concentrate on the teachings of works because he had just discovered righteousness by faith in Christ alone and not in the pope. But a few hundred years have gone by since the Reformation and the Lutheran teachings have made no progress in the direction of works with faith.
What kind of works do the Laodicean church need to practice?
The same works that Jesus Christ taught his disciples.
Matt 28:19.20. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you.
Mark 6:7-13. The disciples went two by two, from house to house. Verse 12. So they went out and preached that people should repent. Verse 13. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
